Hitch-hiking cat who disappeared four months ago is found 400 MILES from home

Safe at home: Charlie back in Cornwall with owner Natasha Johns after she was discovered 400 miles away in Wales

A pet owner was stunned when her missing cat turned up after four months - 400 miles away.

Charlie, a one-year-old black and white moggy, vanished without trace when she was let out of her home in Cornwall for the first time in early February.

Devastated owner Natasha Johns, 18, feared the worst when Charlie failed to return over the following weeks and presumed she was dead.

But she was amazed when she received a phone call from the RSPCA telling her that a dishevelled and injured Charlie had been found scavenging for food in Holyhead, North Wales - more than 400 miles from home.

It is believed Charlie hitched a lift on a lorry and had been living rough.

Miss Johns and partner Ross Saundry bought one-year-old Charlie and her brother Bruster from a nearby farm before Christmas as a gift for their two-year-old daughter Roxanne.

RSPCA Inspector Mike Pugh said he initially assumed Charlie was feral before spotting the contact details on her collar. He said she was in pain where her collar had become embedded in her leg.

'She was extremely timid at first,' he said. 'I coaxed her out with some food as she was also starving hungry. Clearly she had been in a lot of pain and was really frightened.

'I guess that Charlie hitched a ride and it would be interesting to hear from anyone who might be able to tell us the rest of the story.

'Pet owners should ensure their pets are micro-chipped as animals can literally turn up hundreds of miles from home, months and years after they go missing.'
