Talk about a double-header! Amazing photograph shows peculiar pelican with TWO HEADS in flight

Twice the fun: This image captured by a Ukrainian photographer in the Danube Delta appears to have captured a two-headed pelican flying over the river

Two heads are always better than one, the saying goes, although one feathered fowl may disagree.
A pelican that appears to have two heads was captured in flight over the Danube River by a lucky Ukrainian photographer earlier this month.
The image was taken by Vladimir Kucherenko in the Danube Delta, Europe's largest and best preserved delta which is a host to 300 species of birds.

Kucherenko, 57, said he was on a photography expedition to the scenic area when he came across the odd bird soaring in the sky.
However, it was not until Kucherenko returned to his home in Odessa that he noticed the bizarre juxtaposition of the two heads on the bird.
This is not the first time this phenomenon has been seen among the winged representatives of the animal kingdom.

This stunning underwater photo is a graphic reminder that in nature if you escape one predator the next is never far away.
Having evaded a fisherman's net this mullet fish is gobbled up whole by a brown pelican hunting in the waters around the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador.
Spotting an opportunity the peckish pelican opens it gaping bill to scoop up its supper, swallowing the fish whole. Professional photographer Tui de Roy took the amazing underwater snap in the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific.
Mr de Roy, 58, from Takaka, New Zealand, said: 'Pelicans use their long beaks to catch fish and come alongside fishing boats to nab discarded fish.

'I figured that if I waited in the water next to a fishing boat hauling its net in a sandy bay, I might get lucky.

This cunning bird landed himself a free lunch after swooping down to intercept fish being thrown to waiting seals and dolphins.
A boat trip crew member hurled the fish overboard to attract sea animals but passengers were stunned when the Great White Pelican caught two in its huge bill.
Photographer Peter Quint captured the fantastic moment while on holiday in Walvis Bay, in Namibia, Africa. He said: I' was on a dolphin tour with a group of people and the skipper's assistant frequently threw fish into the ocean to attract seals and dolphins.

'This smart bird noticed what was going on, took a dive and caught the fish before landing on the surface.
'The pelican narrowly missed my head because this all happened two metres in front of the camera.'
Peter, from Holland, added: 'Once I saw the photo I was very excited, it was a once in a lifetime shot in a split second with a real wow-factor.'

This is the dramatic moment a seagull on the prowl for food almost ends up as dinner itself by getting dangerously close to the gaping bill of a peckish pelican.

Just as it looks set to be swallowed whole it makes an incredible escape to safety and leaves the pelican in a complete flap.


Pelicans usually survive on a diet of fish, crustaceans and squids, but they have been known to eat smaller birds


Stunned photographer Yuri Belyaev, 35, caught the remarkable last ditch escape while on holiday with his friend in Namibia. The West African country is popular with eco-tourists who visit to enjoy safaris and take boat trips to see dolphins. The coastal wetlands are a popular destination for birdwatchers.


The wing span of pelicans can extend up to three metres, roughly three times the wing span of an average adult seagull


With a wing span extending up to three metres, the pelican's diet is usually fish, crustaceans such as prawns and crabs, and squids, but they have been known to eat amphibians and also smaller birds on occasion.

A few years ago, children were horrified to watch a pelican swallow a pigeon in St. James's Park in London.

Going, going, GONE! Pigeon shuns chance of great escape after being scooped up by hungry pelican in London park

Sitting pretty - but not for long: The pigeon misses his chance to escape from the pelican's beak


When a pigeon was gobbled up by a greedy pelican, it looked like instant game over for the little bird.

But when the predator unexpectedly opened up his huge beak again, the pigeon was given a chance to save himself and fly away.

Confusingly, however, the dopey bird instead chose to simply sit in the beak taking in the view - and missed his only opportunity to escape.

Not surprisingly, he was eaten up.

Photographer Paul Mansfield, 44, captured the remarkable scene while on a day trip to London with his family.

The pigeon had been pecking at crumbs in St James' Park, Westminster, when he was targeted by the pelican.

Mr Mansfield said: 'I noticed a small crowd gathered at the side of a lake that was 'oohing' and 'arghing'.

'On closer inspection I could see what all the fuss was about.
'On the grassy bank a pelican had managed to gobble up a pigeon.'

Mr Mansfield, from Brighton, East Sussex, added: 'The crowd was willing it to escape, with shouts of "Come on, you can do it!".'

'During one such moment the pigeon stood inside the peak, head peering out, with its body silhouetted on the pelican's pouch.

'There was another big gulp and you could see the pigeon slide further down the pouch.

'Then another and it was gone. There were gasps of disbelief from many in the crowd.'
Unbelievably the same pelican then gulped another bird nearby and the whole process started again.

Mr Mansfield said: 'I had seen enough and headed for more pleasant vistas along the South Bank.'
