As the drizzle turns into a downpour, this baby gorilla seeks out its own very personal shelter – its mother’s embrace.
In a heartwarming show of maternal affection captured by photographer Bernd Rohrschneider, the mother ape wraps her furry arms around her offspring as the rain lashes down in Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains.
Nearly half of the world’s estimated 700 critically endangered mountain gorillas live in the region, which is situated at the intersection of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Virunga Mountains, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is situated at the heart of an ongoing conflict that has raged since the Rwanda genocide of 1994.
Earlier this year, fighting forced the Virunga National Park to close to tourists, leaving the mountain gorillas in even greater peril.
Home to nearly 200 gorillas, the park has become a battleground for militia groups and the Congolese army.
